Sony Xperia Z1

Price

At a price of $ 720/Rs. 44,990 you can get this top of the line smartphone

Design

The Sony Xperia Z1 sports a design that's understated yet classy. It takes on where the Xperia Z left off, and improvises on some design aspects. The phone is based on Sony's 'OmniBalance' design philosophy, which has evolved over time

Just like the Sony Xperia Z, the Xperia Z1 looks like a big rectangular glass slab with clean lines that give the phone a minimalistic look.

Display

The Sony Xperia Z1 sports a 5-inch full-HD display with a resolution of 1080x1920 pixels, and a whopping pixel density of 440ppi. The display uses Sony's Triluminos technology, which was first featured on the Xperia Z Ultra.

The Xperia Z1's display is a mixed bag in terms of performance. On one hand, it's bright and vivid; colours look vibrant, text looks crisp and images look sharp, but the viewing angles are not that wide, and the display appears washed-out when you don't look directly into the phone. Viewing angles were much better on the Xperia Z Ultra, in our opinion.

Camera

The Sony Xperia Z1 sports a 20.7-megapixel camera with a 1/2.3-inch Exmor RS image sensor, Sony's G Lens with 27mm wide angle and f/2.0 aperture, and the BIONZ image processing engine. It's for the first time that Sony has integrated these superior imaging features into a smartphone and the Xperia Z1's camera lives up to the expectations we had.

The Timeshift burst mode on the Xperia Z1 shoots 60 quick shots from which the user can select the best one.

Software/User Interface (UI)

The Xperia Z1 ships with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, which is not the latest version of Android, but Sony is likely to bring an update soon. The company has promised an Android 4.3 update for older phones like the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia SP and Xperia Z Ultra. So it is fair to assume the Xperia Z1 will soon be added to that list. Android 4.2 brings goodies like lockscreen widgets, better notifications, and the Daydream picture frame mode, among others.

Sony includes its own UI skin on top of the software on the Xperia Z1, the latest version of Xperia UI. The visual effects - including transition animations between menus, and while launching / dismissing apps - looked great. These effects are not jarring and don't look out of place.

Performance/Battery Life

The Xperia Z1 is powered by a 2.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with 2GB of RAM onboard, coupled with an Adreno 330 GPU. There is 16GB of built-in storage, which is expandable by another 64GB via a microSD card.

The phone comes with a giant 3000mAh battery, and in our usage, the Xperia Z1 lasted us a full working day. We charged the phone in the morning (at around 9 AM), and with medium to heavy usage - including 1-1.5 hours of phone calls, two e-mail accounts with push notifications, playing some music (both on the phone and via internet radio), Twitter notifications and WhatsApp chats - the Xperia Z1 lasted a good 11-12 hours.

Pros

  • Excellent build quality
  • Dust and waterproof
  • Great performance
  • Solid battery life

Cons

  • Poor screen viewing angles
  • Expensive

    Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0

    Price

Samsung has once again hit a pretty sweet sub-$200/£200 price point. At the time of writing you can pick this unassuming 7-inch tablet up for $179.99 (£180)

    Design

Samsung has put out a new designline with the Galaxy Tab 3. We are talking about the hardware home button and touch buttons here. This is a Samsung’s first to place these on their tablets. If we compare the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 with the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 our very first impression is that the tablet has become smaller and thinner, this way it has become more comfortable to hold in your hand.

Time to take a look at all sides of this device.
Front – 7 inch screen, level sensor, 1.3 megapixel front camera, home button and two touch sensitive buttons.
Left side – Micro SD opening
Right side – Microphone, Lock Button, Volume rockers
    Top – 3.5 mm plug
Bottom – 2 speakers, micro USB connector and a microphone
    Back – 3 megapixel camera

    Interface

With the new Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 Samsung is using their new Touch Wiz Nature UX interface. Unfortunately this is not the latest version of their Touch Wiz Nature UX. For example, the icons are not that sharp as it is the case with the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 , this is a small loss. Also we noticed that this tablet unlike its bigger brothers runs on Android 4.1.2, where its bigger brothers have inherited Android 4.2.2. We expect Samsung to update this tablet to Android 4.2.2 in the coming months, and than we also expect sharper menu icons after this update.

Generally everyone knows the Touch Wiz Nature UX interface of Samsung. So we will not dive into this content.

    Multimedia

In the multimedia section, this tablet does the same things as the Galaxy Tab2 7.0. Unfortunately we have to ask ourselfves why Samsung has forgotten the simple thing like multi-window. However, this tablet comes standard with the new gallery which will give this tablet or a more expensive appearance. All in all we have no complaints about its multimedia options, although this tablet has no radio application.

    Screen

The Galaxy Tab3 7.0 is using a 7 ich TFT display with a resolution of 1024 x 600 (WSVGA) and the pixel density here is 170. This resolution we know back from the previous generation Galaxy Tablets. Samsung probably has some screens left over or this is the cheapest way to produce these tablets to keep the price as low as possible.

    Camera

The Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 is using a 3 megapixel camera on its back and a 1.3 megapixel front camera. Only the front camera has been updated from the Galaxy Tab2, unfortunately the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 still uses the old camera interface. However, there are some features and photo scenes present to make reasonable photos. Touch Focus is not present wich is kind of odd but there is a digital zoom up to 4 times, which is going to the expense of the picture quality.

    Performance

Samsung has installed a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor in the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 .This processor is good enough for every days use. Samsung increased the Galaxy Tab 3’s processor with 0.2 GHz compared to the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0. Of course, this tablet is not the fastest but what do you expect from a entry level tablet with this price.

    Battery

The Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 uses a 4000 mAh battery, in our opinion the battery has a descent amount of juice for a tablet. According to the information of the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 which also has a 4000 mAh battery, this tablet has a Standby Time Up to 1000 Hours, of course this is not bad!

    Smart Functions

Where Samsung nowadays implants their smart functions in every product, that is not the case with this tablet. Even the basic Smart Stay is abcent, bad thing Samsung! Of course this tablet is very cheap but this feature in our eyes could be there considering the Galaxy Tab3 8.0 has this function. Now we do have voice control in this device (if you can call this a smart function).

    Nexus 5

The Biggest Question "When it is releasing ?"

Well the confirm releasing date of the awaiting Nexus 5 is November 1 (in the UK)

    Nexus 5 Price

The Nexus 5 continues in the same vein , with the 16 GB model pricing at £299/ $349
and for the 32 GB model pricing at £339/$399

    Nexus 5 Operating system (OS)

The Nexus 5 is the first smartphone to run Android 4.4, so if you want the latest version of Google's OS in your hand as soon as possible then this is the phone you'll want.

    Nexus 5 Battery

The inclusion of the Snapdragon 800 processor means power efficiency will be pretty good on the Nexus 5 and with a 2300mAh battery it should last a decent amount of time on a single charge.

It's good for up to 17 hours of talk time, 8.5 hours of Wi-Fi internet browsing and 7 hours of high speed 4G surfing.

If you hate cables then you'll be thrilled to learn that the Nexus 5 comes with wireless charging built in.

    Nexus 5 Screen

Google (well LG technically) has equipped the new Nexus 5 with a 4.95-inch, full HD IPS display which sports an eye popping 445ppi pixel density.

    Nexus 5 Power

To go with that impressive display, the Nexus 5 is also packing some serious heat under the bonnet with a punchy 2.26GHz quad-core processor - Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800

Couple with 2GB of RAM and the Nexus 5 is a seriously top-end handset with an extremely attractive mid-range phone price tag.

That's not all though, the Nexus 5 also sports an Adreno 330 GPU - which should make for some pretty decent on screen graphics.

    Nexus 5 Camera

Those of you who love taking photos with your phone will be disappointed to learn LG has only put an 8MP sensor on the rear of the Nexus 5. That's the same as last year's Nexus 4 and is no where near the 13MP and above cameras were seeing on handsets now

But there is also a front facing, 1.3MP camera for video calls and all important selfies - so all is not lost.

    Nexus 5 Design

Thanks to its larger display the Nexus 5 is longer and wider than its predecessor, but it has managed to shave off some depth with vital statistics of 137.84 x 69.17 x 8.59mm.

The good news in the design comes in terms of the weight, with the Nexus 5 shedding 9g to tip the scales at 130g (4.59oz).

    Nexus 5 Extra Specs

There are a range of other features embedded in the Google Nexus 5 including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, 4G LTE, GPS and NFC - ensuring you'll always be well connected.

There's no microSD slot, so if you want to expand on the 16GB/32GB of internal storage you'll have to take to the cloud

LG has managed to throw in a few sensors too, including a gyroscope, accelerometer, compass, proximity/ambient light sensor, pressure sensor and something called a Hall sensor - we're working on finding out what that will offer.
